Perkins 4.107

Trying getting to grips with the perkins 4.107 on my Elysian34. Why is there two fuel intakes coming from the Desil tank, and why are they coming from the top of the desil tank. There is a 3rd desil line for the glow plug which has as separate small tank, I worked that out pretty simple.

You have a supply and a return line from the engine. The supply line has a stand pipe to the bottom of the tank.

What Ecos said is right. Most of the fuel feeding a diesel is not injected, it is used to cool and lubricate the injection pump and is then returned to the tank.

The glow plug you are referring to is the cold start aid. I do not know why it is fed from a separate tank on your 4.107. On my former 4.108 it was fed from the main tank via the mechanical fuel pump. Perhaps the design was different on the 4.107 or the plan was to use a different fuel for the cold start aid. Was this engine used in a very cold climate?

..thanks for that info folks.. (1)No the engine was used in Ireland, on the Shannon, so not a particularly cold climate.. I assumed the fuel for this cold start was desil..am I correct ? (2) I can understand the send and receive cycle you are talking about, but why are both pipes on the top of the tank.. ?

They are both on the top of the tank because of ABYC rules. ABYC is concerned about openings in the tank at the bottom that may fail and leak.

The fuel pickup extends to near the bottom of the tank. Depending on who built it there may be a screen on the end of the pickup tube or it may just be cut off at an angle.

I can only guess that the cold start aid fuel supply is from a different tank because someone intended to use something other than diesel fuel in cold start conditions. That is only a guess on my part. I suggest that you talk to an older, experienced diesel mechanic for a better answer.

Some people use #1 diesel in cold start accessories because it ignites easier and doesn't soot up the start aid. Also works better in diesel stoves and heaters.
