Perkins 4-108 High Operating Temps

My 4-108 has started to show high operating temps. I have checked the sea strainer and the impeller, both OK.I have pulled the heat exchanger bundle, and it is being cleaned and tested.(It did not look bad, but it was out and I thought that cleaning and testing was good procedure.)
I have also read in various places that the injected elbow might cause high temps. Question......is it neccessary to remove the entire elbow to clean it, or would it be OK to just open up the water injection line??
Any other suggestions?

Did you check both water pump impellers.

You have 2 water pumps, 1 fresh, 1 salt water

Did you check the thermostat

Fresh water pump belt tight

Just to name a few

Personally, I would remove it for cleaning, particularly if it needed a chemical bath, and to prevent loosened scales and such causing mischief down stream where it might clog somewhere else depending on how your system is set up.

Re: Perkins 4-108 high operating temps

This is what i do when my 4236 start to geting hot, about 210 at hig rpm,
1, raw water pump impeller.
2, oil coolers and heat exchanger cleaning.
3, header tank cleaning, lots of scale inside.
4, cooper and steel pipes cleaned.
5.termostat changed.
6.check if the fresh water pump impeller is working and check for leaks. in this case nothing to do with the fresh water pump, works ok.
7. flush and clean all the water pasages in the engine block, there is some drain plugs somewhere,
8. elbow. check for carbon scale and corrosion.
9. finally top the dam thing with a good antifreeze mix and run the engine.

Now the engine stuck in between 170 and 180 no matter the rpms, full rpms same, 180.
Hope this help.
Cheers.

If you can, get a bucket and measure the water coming out of the exhaust at 2500 rpm. The general rule for heat exchanger cooled engines is 15 gpm per 100 horsepower, so you should be seeing a minimum of 6 gpm.

All of the above are good suggestion but before you do all of this, check the prop. We ran a 4-108 for a number of years. Chuck
