There are spacers involved, and need to "register" properly to not bind the gear.

Absolutely Boatyard.. Yes, Thanks. But this starter was off by 3/4 inch and was riding on the flywheel full time after the start disengaged. Im so fortunate it caused issues before it destroyed the flywheel and as the installer, I should have caught this. Its clearly bad fitment and I need the proper part.

Thanks clakiep, Yes does sound like this, indeed. But it was clearly the starter gear and with the starter out, now its silent and smooth when turned over. Only some slight sound from the timing gears, No chains in this engine! Im hopeful of a nice installation when I get the proper starter!
