G'day, The Rock Tractor Centre , The Rock, N S W. This mob know more about Perkins than the rest put together. Cheap parts fast service used them many times no issues.

Re: Perkins 404D-22 Making a horrible popping sound.

From where I'm standing, something doesn't seem kosher about that 9000.00 number, but I'm 10,000 miles away...

My (heavily biased) opinion is against Yanmar, and for the Kubota/Twin Disc. Nanni and Beta use the same Kubota base engine, so whoever has the best dealer support network in your area would heavily influence my decision. I'd be interested in Uncle Bobs suggestion as well...

There is a shallow draft pan available for the Kubota.

The Yanmar is about 3 cm taller from the bottom of the engine mounts than the Kubota, if that is important.

Do not underestimate the effort to repower with a completely different engine; for an experienced boatwright, it is a relatively simple, straightforward task (though not often inexpensive), for the local partschanger, you'll likely never have the satisfaction and peace of mind a modern new diesel should bring...

Yanmar just doesn't seem as customer friendly (not the local dealer, Yanmar itself) as does Kubota...your experience could easily be just the opposite.

Its the gantry I've built for shifting the engine to the base of the companionway. Will weld the final touches on tomorrow.

Re: Perkins 404D-22 Making a horrible popping sound.

Jim
From memory
Engine $7550
water pump">Raw water pump $1450
Engine mounts $250
Total $9250
This is reusing my heat exchanger, instrument pannel and gear box. So when you facter these bits in your not saving much unlesh you take the gamble on the old parts.
The new engines come with all of these and the confidence that it's all new.

Re: Perkins 404D-22 Making a horrible popping sound.

1450.00 for a raw water pump? Highway robbery is definitely not kosher...

Which is beside the point, I certainly understand the peace of mind that can be derived from starting from square one.

The engine from WM looks good to me. I like particularly that it has a relatively low rpm /max output, a Johnson r/w pump, Polyflex mounts and a 2" exhaust outlet, plus the local marinization makes it at least a little more likely that they have a vested interest in customer satisfaction, which might reflect positively on the service and support you get after the sale...

I'd double check the height, that engine is shoehorned in there tighter than 'Dick's hatband'.

Which brings up; is there no provision to completely remove the 'island' that covers the engine? If there isn't, can you modify the island so there is? Access to hook up, align and more easily maintain the engine will do nothing but add value, and likely save time, now and in the future.

At the very least, after the engine is out, now would be the time to add a large port side access panel, it there isn't one already. I'd hate to have to pull the engine just to change the starter...

Re: Perkins 404D-22 Making a horrible popping sound.

Jim.
I exaggerated the water pump Price. Double checked it. $1388. This includes pump,Drive gear, bearings, seal rings and a holder if needed..
Just double checked the heights, She is 21mm shorter but 7mm deeper (Shaft to sump). This will be OK.
I will have a think about the access. I will be completely overhauling the engine bed and Bay while its empty. Starboard access has always been pretty good and there is a small hatch on the port side but it is tight there. I will give it some thought.
I have actually replaced the starter before. I have a 3 ft socket extension bought specifically for the job.

FWIW, I've had a few dealings with John Wichard over the years, and have fund him to be most helpful to a transient yottie who only needed some small part or advice about kubota engines... and mine is a Nanni, not one of his manufacture. Damn nice guy!

You won't be sorry, same engine that is fitted to my boat and when you need advice, assistance or parts John goes out of his way to help, as Jim put it, a damn nice guy.

Re: Perkins 404D-22 Making a horrible popping sound.

Thanks for the heads up, Bob.
I didn't know he existed before you mentioned him.
Now i just have to get the old engine up and out through the companion way this weekend.
I am strangely enjoying the process.

Ahhh, good onya, mate. It's always good to find another escapee from the loony ward. Finding fun in adversity, expense and frustration is the mark of the true yottie.

You'll enjoy the new engine even more because of all the travail.

Alos got the motor lifted off the boat and had a look at the new engine.
