Perkins 4107 running temperatures

Sorry, this is long and has a lot of information.

I have a Perkins 4107, its my second in the same boat. I was test running this on a stand and got these results at tickover after about 30 mins running.

The digital readout 32.2C / 90F is the exhaust temperature at the elbow outlet and is water and fumes.

I have now installed this engine in the boat and getting the same readings with raw water indirect cooling. The oil is not cooled but I can add a heat exchanger. The thermostat has been checked but I cant remember if its 75 or 82 degrees. I have cleaned the tubes and the strainer. I havent checked the impellor but its fairly new. The thermostat is ringed below.
These seem to be about the same as my old 4107.
I have a video of the engine running on the test bed but cant seem to unload it.

The water temp seems a little high but the oil stays about there.

So the questions:
1. is it running too hot?
2. is the exhaust too hot?

Re: Perkins 4107 running temperatures

That’s either the temp gauge sender or the high temp switch in the red circle, the thermostat is under the bolted on cover to the right. No useful information regarding oil or water temp can be obtained at idle, the bypass in the cooling system allows enough coolant circulation through the block, cylinder head and heat exchanger to remove heat generated at idle without opening the thermostat. Likewise, the oil takes a surprisingly long time to get to a sensible operating temperature for an accurate pressure reading. On your gauges , if those readings are at idle , the oil and water temp are high for an idling engine but the oil pressure is more than good. I’d be checking the gauges against readings from an infrared temp gun to make sure they’re telling the truth.
Congratulations on the new engine.

Re: Perkins 4107 running temperatures

I'VE CRACKED MY Perkins 4107 OVERHEATING PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!

Temperature went up to 100C+ So did the oil temp so it wasn't the sender or gauge.
  1. I checked the impeller pump, perfect.
  2. I changed my cooling pipe from 5/8" to 25mm same problem
  3. I tasted the coolant - no salt (But it was AWFUL)
  4. There was pressure in the header tank after I left it ten days - No leak then
  5. Remove the Thermostat and test it - Opened fine in boiling water
  6. Maybe an air lock so I topped up the header, turned it over, left it a few days topped it again (after removing the thermostat)
NOW FOR THE TEST RUN No bubbles so I put radiator cap back on.
    (Next was the stack removal.)

I have now run the engine for an hour, tickover and in gear at various rev's

It didn't go over 80C.

First Pic Readings now. 2nd Readings before thermostat removal.

Do I need a Thermostat anyway?

Re: Perkins 4107 running temperatures

It's common for engines with a similar thermostat placement to form a air bubble below the thermostat. Until the thermostat opens the bubble keeps the thermostat from receiving the full heat of the coolant. Once the thermostat does open the bubble is gone.
A solution is a thermostat with a small hole in the thermostat plate that allows air thru.
