Propane outboard engine

Does anyone here have any real world experience with propane outboards? I'm looking for a 2.5 hp motor for our dinghy and see Lehr has one for $300 more than a gas outboard, which is about the price of a carburator rebuild. I just wonder if the bugs have been worked out of these engines or if the negative reviews have been overblown.

Re: Propane outboard engine

I have a LEHR 2.5 that I've used on my dinghy for the past three years. I have been more than satisfied with the motor. I appreciate the ease of the propane.
I had a mercury and honda outboard previously. Because I don't cruise full time my motor hangs on the rail and only gets used periodically. With the gas outboards I always had issues with the carburetors gumming up even when I ran the fuel dry between uses.
I haven't had any difficulties with the LEHR. It starts first pull every time.
My only complaint is the use of the cheap plastic clips to hold on the cowling. LEHR could have built these engines with beefier clips.

Re: Propane outboard engine

I've had a Lehr 5.5hp for two years. It gets used daily for two weeks in the summer and occasionally the rest of the year. Usually a couple months in the garage between use.

Some carb adjustment needed when first used. No attention since. For me the long term storage abuse tolerance makes it a great choice.

Top speed 7 knots with 10' Achilles air floor.
