Proper belt tensioning.

I recently broke off and alt mount. I think partially because of having it bolted on the way and partially from over tensioning. My engine manual says between 1/2" and 3/8" of deflection when depressed by thumb between the water pump and alt. but that seems to cause a lot of flogging between the alt and the drive shaft. Is a half inch correct?
