Re: Pulling engine to paint, what else should we do?

Seems like a lot of work to just paint the engine.

Re: Pulling engine to paint, what else should we do?

I recommend pulling the injector pump and the injectors while the engine is out of the boat. Shop bill to rebuild the 4 injectors and the pump was less than $500 .00 on my 50 year old Perkins 4-108.

IT NOW RUNS LIKE A NEW ENGINE !!!

Geez, don’t pull the engine if you don’t need to - lots of connections, and one of them is going to break in the process.
Can usually replace motor mounts without hauling the motor, and use long handled brushes to clean/paint bilge.

Access to my fuel tank is impossible whist the engine ,Atomic 4 ,is in place . When I pulled the beast for an overhaul, the gas tank eas pulled tanked at the machine and painted with one part white polyurethane and it really lightens up the engine on my cal 29

Re: Pulling engine to paint, what else should we do?

Someone mentioned oil pan gasket. I recommend replacing the entire oil pan. If your engine was like mine, there was saltwater sloshing around below it hitting the oil pan.

Further I once had seawater in the oil pan so saltwater hit both sides of the pan.

I would even consider an extra coat of paint on the oil pan to help ensure it would last a long time.

Re: Pulling engine to paint, what else should we do?

Think twice about changing the colour of the bilge. For many years mine was a dull grey primer which I cleaned up and repainted white when I had the engine out. Looked great for awhile but then the white started to flake in places. Had I stuck with the grey primer, the flakes wouldn’t be noticeable. It can be hard to get the new paint to bond to the old after years of oil and grease and belt dust stains, especially if the surface is rough or textured.
