Qst - Velvet drive Transmission help appreciated.

I'm changing oil today and going thru all my manuals can't find what to do on my transmission. I have the Borg Warner Velvet drive on a Perkins 4-236. The dipstick shows the correct level and the fluid is clean but I don't find any reference as to what to put in it, how often and if there is a filter somewhere that needs to be changed.

Any help is appreciated. Don't ever want to replace one.

I got one too.

Use ATF Dextron (sp)
Change once a season or as needed
There is no filter that I know of.
It should take about 1.25 qrts.
Check your coolers as well.

Look under the shop manuals thread. It shouldbe in there.

Mr. Wheels should jump in here any moment.

Aloha Dave,
This is all paraphrased straight out of my Velvet Drive Service Manual,
"Check the oil after the transmission has been running and is at operating termperature. Shut down the engine with the shift lever in neutral and immediately check the oil level.
Use Dexron Type F (ATF) or any hydraulic fluid which meets the C-3 oil specification.
Change oil if operating temperatures have exceeded 190 deg.. Change once every 1000 hours or annually.
If your engine never reaches 3000 rpm you can use a high quality 30 weight oil but never mix different oils or fluid in the trans."
Hope this helps.

I don't need to, you two have done great.
Although, running Amsoil ATF is a great idea if you can get hold of it. You won't have to change it again for a very long time and it reduces the heat dramaticly. Just keep a regular inspection to ensure you have no water in the oil.
No I don't sell it or represent it. hmmmm......maybe I should :-)

Re: Qst - Velvet drive Transmission help appreciated.

On the 70 series (71,70) there is an oil filter screen, no the easiest to change but a filter just the same. There are two different types depending on how old th trans is.
If your going to change the ATF annually it's a good idea to pull the filter, which is a steel mesh filter, this will alert you to an issue before it becomes a major issue.
I just rebuilt my 71C about 2 months ago.
There are a number of good videos on youtube showing the disassembly of those transmissions, just use velvet drive rebuild for a search, the videos vary in quality but the basic things, like the filter are pretty straight forward.
It wont show small particles but will trap anything substantial if theres an issue, usually mostly goop and trans residue.

Dextron ATF as others have said and check your zincs in your coolers. I had a cooler fail on me and the transmission filled with seawater.
