Re: Raw water pump or something else?

What is the exact problem? Is it just the impeller, is the seal gone/leaking or did the whole pump seize up?

Would take the pump out and inspect to see what is needed. If you are handy and have a little time, maybe you can do a minor or major rebuild kit to restore it instead of buying a new pump.

Depending on your engine, you may have 2 water pumps. IIRC, the IP29 got a Yanmar 3GM30F. In that case it has 2 pumps.
1) top center, belt driven with large 1.5” hoses.
2) lower corner of the block, belt driven, with 5/8” or 3/4” hoses.

Which one?

Re: Raw water pump or something else?

I was offshore coming in and it instantly quit working.. I thought that was odd. Almost like it sucked up a plastic bag or something. I had put a new impeller in 2 days earlier. I was hoping it was just an impeller issue. I looked at it and was fine. Its for a Westerbeke. Im not sure if they can be cleaned up or what. I guess ill pull this one off and take it home to look at.

My boat is one of the odd models and came with a Westerbeke 30b Three

You may still have a bag stuck in the thru hull.
Pull the pump intake hose off see if you have gravity flow and blow back thru it.

Took the bottom hose off the pump. It free flows. Looks like the pump is shot Im guessing. Was hoping a plastic bag or a clog.

Could still be a bad impeller. They Are designed to fail from opening the package.
Also check the inlet and outlet of the pump for impeller blade debris. It would also be good to open the end of the heat exchange and check for debris.

Re: Raw water pump or something else?

Pump shaft has rounded off. The thing it keys into is wallered out too.. Not sure how to get that wallered out part out. There was a single bolt on the plate. Took it off but plate dont budge. Not sure if I need to remove the 4 pump mounting studs or the plate just needs some persuasion.
My guess is that big bearing around the wallered out part got hot and locked up or something and everything got stripped?

Re: Raw water pump or something else?

That pump is rebuildable. I wouldn’t stress much about the drive side.

Pump seems fine. Just needs a new shaft. Im unsure about the drive side part it keys into.

Re: Raw water pump or something else?

What is the model # of the pump?

How much to rebuild vs replace?

If you need a new shaft (which it appears you do), then you will need a major rebuild kit. Price for a new pump is usually only slightly more than a major rebuild kit. If it is only $10-20 for a new pump would opt for that.

Replacing the drive gear will probably require getting into the timing gears.

Id probably almost opt for a repower at that point. Im mechanically inclined but this engine is turning me into an engine mechanic. A year ago I knew nothing about diesel engines. Now Im learning something new all the time for the wrong reasons.

Does the pump shaft go directly into the pump drive gear? Im not sure what Im looking at cause the pump is facing backwards and Im looking at it with a mirror.

Is is possible the gear is OK and its just the shaft thats toast?

Thanks for your help BTW.
