Raw water pump repeatedly leaking

Greetings All,

Firstly, thanks to the many contributors for their informative and helpful input to this forum.

The water pump">raw water pump on my Volvo D 2-75F has a slow drip from the bearing for the 3rd time in less than 300 hours. The original pump (2014 engine) performed great for over 1,200 hours. In the last 300 hours I have had the seals and bearings replaced 3 times. It has been by different mechanics in different locations in Mexico.

Any thoughts on why this is repeatedly failing so frequently?

I am certainly not an expert in these matters, but wearing out a seal in such a short time sounds unusual to me. Are you sure the shaft is in good shape and doesn't have a "lip" from wear?

Re: Raw water pump repeatedly leaking

I have the same problem on the Johnson pumps on my Nanni diesels. The seals seem to wear a groove into the shaft and replacement seals do not last the season. I carry spare pumps and a box of seals now. When I replace the seals I try to seat the shafts .5 to 1mm either way in the pump to spread out the wear. Pretty frustrating. A friend with a large fishing boat tells me he fixed this using Marine Tex and sandpaper, but I don't see that as a lasting solution.

Google "Speedi-Sleeve"... I solved a similar issue on a Johnson pump with one of these. Has worked for some hundreds of hours now.

McMaster Carr calls them shaft repair sleeves. Yeah, sagablu and Jim Cate are onto something here.

Perhaps you need a new shaft also. Go to Marineparts_pumps on ebay. You'll probably find a kit for your pump and you can buy with a shaft, bearings preinstalled so you do not need a press to disassemble.,

Was just about to suggest the same thing, I discovered them many moons ago and repaired a leaking vehicle diff pinion seal, complete with worn seal face at less than one third the cost of a new replacement part. Lasted a looong time and then sold the vehicle.

Re: Raw water pump repeatedly leaking

If the pump is belt driven, maybe over-tightening the drive belt, or a misalignment of the pulleys...

Re: Raw water pump repeatedly leaking

I had a leak from a Volvo water pump that was not a seal; but, a hairline crack in the shaft in the area of the seal. I took the shaft to a jeweler who did laser welding. He even welded in SS and filled the crack for about $25. I then filed it and polished it smooth. Being a Volvo part I could maybe have bought a new shaft for less than $10,000.

Having suffered the same problem, and gone through several pump rebuilds, new shafts etc, it was down to and eccentric pulley on the pump.
The eccentricity was far from easy to spot, and the problem finally resolved by replaceing the pulley for a machined-from-solid one.modified to fit the pump.

New Pump is under 300-400$ and last in crystal clear sea water like in Greece,Croatia 1500-3000 hour. Long time we in charter don't exchange seal simple for VP D2- engine exchange all pump. after exchanging new pump we don't need touch impeller 3 years.(1500 hour)

Another option, assuming it's the 'usual' worn shaft where it mates with the lip seal is to use a double-lipped seal instead of the single lipped standard one; not only are there now two barriers against leaks rather than one, but they'll run at slightly different points on the worn shaft than the original did.
