Repair of the Nissan / Tohatsu Internal Fuel Tank

As many of these little 2.5 and 3.5 outboards there are out there, I figured someone else has done all the hard work on this problem.

My little 2.5 Nissan internal fuel tank is weeping slightly from the internal fuel tank. THe leak seems to be where the tank has a manufactors seam/mold line.

As anyone tried a repair on these little plastic tanks? If so what worked, what has not?

I looked at just buying a new tank, but the cost for just the tank is nearly the same as a used 2.5 outboard.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

JSB

Re: Repair of the Nissan/Tohatsu internal fuel tank

I have had this problem also. PO left outboard in a vehicle and closed the vent all under the hot sun. Tank burst along seem.

The outboard was a spare motor. I was on Grand Turk and needed it without having access to parts or supplies.

I just JB welded it. Clean it really well, fuel drained of course. JB weld is still working after 3 months. I figured that it was best to take the cheap route (and only possible one) and replace the tank later if I had a problem.

Re: Repair of the Nissan/Tohatsu internal fuel tank

I think it is crazy, but IIRC, Tohatsu recommends that the internal fuel tank be replaced every 3 years!
