Rev Counter Reads Intermittently

The rev counter on our CAT 3208 NA has recently started to operate intermittently. It will "stick"on say 1100 rpm even though we have throttled up clearly above that. A few minutes later it may (or may not) jump up to the correct reading. These events all seem random? The rev counter runs off the alternator I am told. Any suggestions please?

Re: Rev counter reads intermittently

May be as simple as the drive belt needs tightening. If it is loose it may read low when the alternator is having to put amps into the battery and will then corret itself when the battery is more fully charged.

Re: Rev counter reads intermittently

Will this be on the rear of the alternator? If so can it be identified by any particular marking etc?

Many thanks. All fixed. It was the alternator belt which had stretched beyond the max adjustment. Replaced with a shorter belt and all seems just fine.

Advice much appreciated.
