Riser for Universal Diesel # 5432

Help! I found a hole in the riser for my Universal Atomic Diesel, Model 5432!
There seems to be no cast iron replacement for this part and the mechanic wants to use an aluminum riser. Is this the best I can do? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thumbs up Re: Riser for Universal Diesel # 5432

Hi Ricre2, I am not quite sure of your description of RISER on your engine.I assume it to be the salt water inlet... The use of ordinary aluminium is definitely a NO NO. . Although there is a salt water resistant aluminium alloy. Copper, Bronze, Plastic, even heavy gauge steel, are more resistant to salt water than Aluminium. However if it is the alternative term for the exhaust pipe, then a fabricated part from ordinary steel is nearly as durable as cast iron. and far more durable than Aluminium.. H the boat.

Re: Riser for Universal Diesel # 5432

Aluminum in this application is not advised. Bronze, thick wall stainless steel or black iron. I build new exhaust systems from the end of the manifold, to the elbow with injection tube welded in and a short nipple of black iron for a low price, less than $75 for a 1 1/2" . We had one in yesterday for repair that had a severely occluded exhaust before the water injection due to low flow. The 1 1/2" pipe was reduced to less than 3/4", so back pressure was excessive not allowing the engine to run at optimum speed.
