Starter motor and gearbox of a Vetus F1.03 (Farymann 18W Marine)

Hi,

I have this clean Vetus F1.03 (based on the Farymann 18W marine) 1 cylinder diesel engine, which has a few problems. My knowledge in engines is very basic, but i've managed to sort out a few things allready. But there are still two things not quite right.

The first thing is the starter motor. The Bendix drive is not engaging the flywheel properly(you only hear the bendix 'click', or slamming into the flywheel). When i grease the both up, it engages right away the first time starting the engine. After that, i need to put it in gear, spin the driveshaft to turn the flywheel (re-alligning the teeth on the flywheel with the Bendix drive). And then, when i'm lucky, it engages after repeating this procedure a few times.

Another problem i'm facing is concerning the gearbox. When the engine IS running, it goes into forward drive quite roughly. Reverse gear is going in very nicely. You can see the driveshaft start to turn from very slow to matching the engine speed. On forward drive, you hear a loud bang, and its instantly turning at engine speed.

Could someone give me some advice on how to tackle these problems? Thanks in advance!
