Starter Motor Volvo Penta D2-55

I am considering carrying a spare starter motor C/W solenoid for our planned 2017 Pacific crossing on our Lagoon 44' Cat. I understand an original Volvo starter motor is grossly expensive. Wondering if anyone can tell me who actually makes the unit for Volvo and where else it might be used in the auto industry perhaps. Make and model number would be very helpful.

Re: Starter Motor Volvo Penta D2-55

Dont know the D2-55, but the MD series use a Mitsubishi starter. Nothing special, off the shelf automotive grade starter, sprayed green...like most Volvo parts and motors. Volvo price: $850. Auto parts store: $85 or less.

I suggest pulling the starter and looking for manufacturer's marks. Added bonus to this approach is you get to do it once in a controlled situation (like at the dock). The MD series is a bitch to pull...you need a stupid long extension that will reach from the front of the engine, underneath the heat eachanger, to the starter, to get to the upper starter bolt...practically inaccessible any other way...best to learn that somewhere besides mid ocean.

Google "volvo d2-55 starter motor" Lots of options at reasonable cost.
