I believe this is correct.

There should be a pick up strainer. Look in your manual.

Depending on the pump design, pieces may make it through to the filter. Some pumps might wedge small bits and jam.

Make your "straw" longer than your dipstik tube!
At any rate I doubt it's a problem in there, glad you got it out though...
