Thornycroft...

Looking at a Moody but feeling a little sketched out by the Thornycroft plant. Anyone have words of wisdom...pro or con?
Thx

Re: Thornycroft...

These engines are marinized British Ford Fiesta motors.
If you were in Europe you can keep them running as there are used parts from lots of auto wreckers as well as some of the parts are still available from marine sources however in North America there are no parts available that I was ever aware of. Like automobiles their max hp is developed at rather high rpm so not the most powerful option for the Moody. I had problems with mine and after having multi delays and difficulties getting parts I finally bit the bullet and changed over to a Beta 50 and while not cheap it was an outstanding improvement in performance and operation.
My advice is if the rest of the boat-is well kept and maintained then allow for a chunk of dough to install a new engine and operate the Thornycroft until some major problems occur and then make the switch. We loved our Moody 425.

Yes parts availability is obviously the big concern here. If the engine is low hours and well maintained then it's a bit less concerning in short term but....it is from a 1985 boat so old age becomes the latent threat.
