Throttle/Forward-Reverse Control Locations

Hi everyone,

I have a Northern 25 sailboat with a Johnson 9.9 long shaft outboard. This spring I am thinking about putting in a remote control linkage so I can control from the cockpit. The tiller location on the Northern 25 is towards the front of the cockpit making it tricky to control throttle and gear while docking.

I am trying to figure out where to mount the controls. Should I mount controls insdie the cockpit locker where they'll be out of the way and I don't have to worry about stepping on them or should I mount them outside of the locker?

Also does anyone know of a good control unit I can purchase for this task?

Thanks

Steve

Re: Throttle/Forward-Reverse Control Locations

I would suggest mounting the control box where you can reach it while at the helm, without opening any hatches or covers. In close quarters, you'll want these controls right at hand.

If you're worried about tripping over it when the engine's not in use, you could make a hard cover to put over it, that is removed when it's in use.

Re: Throttle/Forward-Reverse Control Locations

Teleflex makes a very nice single leaver control for around 150 clams, and for another 150 there is a replacement leaver that is quick release and removalbe for sailing. I installed one and am very happy with it.

This picture is of a similar boat to yours, (a Mirage 26/27), showing the transmission shifter and throttle at front, on the starboard cockpit locker.
