Have not done it, but have contemplated it.
In looking at it for a thruster project I had on a houseboat, the only modification that I can see would be to put a centralized tiller arm on the outboard so that you have equal throw ratios port and starboard.

That makes it more fascinating to experiment with (wheels turning in pea sized brain)
