Tohatsu NSF6 outboard regulator/alternator question

Hello friends.
I have obtained a tohatsu nsf6 outboard motor on our sailboat.
Looking over it’s innards I noticed it has the optional regulator attached, however the extension that would lead the plus and minus dc regulated 12v power to the outside of the engine (and on to a battery) is not attached.
I have yet to measure any power from the unit while the motor is running.
I am assuming that if they attached a regulator (optional) that they have likely installed the alternator option as well as without it the regulator has nothing to regulate.
However we all know what happens when we assume things…(this is a boat where I found all the wires ripped out and replaced with one red wire to a fuse box and all other items that had two wires (lights etc) I found the plus and minus twisted together and tied into one pole of the fuse box-in other words there was no ground!)
so-
I will guess that if power is at the regulator (ac in and 12v dc out ) then there is an alternator- if no power them I will trace it back.

My question?

If I find 12v dc from regulator then I may simply splice in an extension cable and connectors to connect it to my battery?

I believe the regulator is 60 watts (per manual) which would make 5 amps (60= i * 12 or 60/12= I ) p=I * v

Is there anything else I need to know about this circuit to not damage my engine?

Thank you
