Transmission gear tooth broken?

A line got wrapped around the propeller of my boat and stopped the engine.

The engine is is a Westerbeke 30B with a General (JM Transmission)

I know these things are built hell for stout, but is there any likelihood that a gear tooth got broken or chipped.

If so, short of pulling the transmission out, how can I check?

Thanks,

Tysen

Re: Transmission gear tooth broken?

Stalling the engine is probably not enough shock loading to break a tooth off or even chip one.

I agree with Raymond. Even if you hit a rock at full speed, you are more likely to damage the prop or shaft than the tranny. A wrapped up rope would stop the engine quickly, but in terms of G's on the transmission gears that's way slow.

Almost zero chance.

Run it in gear, you will know real quick if it's missing a tooth. If it runs smooth as normal then all is good.

Use a long thin magnetic wand down the dipstick access hole ,wiggle it around a bit ,remove carefully ,wipe off with a clean white tissue, look carefully for bits af metal, hopefully none .⛵️⚓️

If the transmission works and does not make noise, it is most likely fine. The springs in your drive plate on the other hand, may have taken a good hit and this could shortened the life of the drive plate. It too is most likely fine. They usually begin to make noise prior to failure. Particularly at idle speed.

Suggest you check all your engine mounts also. / Len

Re: Transmission gear tooth broken?

If you want reassurance re gear damage drain the oil into a container then pour a litre (quart) or so of diesel through the gear box into the same catch container and stir the bottom of the catch container with a magnet. Any steel should collect on the magnet. Don't forget to refill the gear box with oil.
