Re: Universal 5411 Exhaust Flange Search

As A64 said different expansion rates aren't significant. Here are the criteria that I'd use if rebuilding a wet exhaust:
Make sure the exhaust manifold flange and exhaust flange are clean and flat.
Use a good quality gasket.
And this is important, inject the water on the downhill side of the elbow.
If the exhaust manifold is at or below the WL use an elevated loop with a vacuum breaker where the bottom of the loop is 15-18" above the WL

Re: Universal 5411 Exhaust Flange Search

Thanks a64 !...but availability and affordability are critical too ...these standard black iron ( and I'm finding SS ) pipes are readily available...would bronze pipe be ?..(haven't heard of cupro nickel)...but I'll definitely ask about both here at Alro Metals (to start)...interesting and surprising to hear SS wouldn't really outlast iron ! :O
THANKS for the pointers !

Re: Universal 5411 Exhaust Flange Search

Thanks Kenbo...will do. I've got the original riser assembly off, so I'll take that with me to the shop...only thing not off/out of engine yet are the 2 studs.

Speaking of gaskets...what kind of temps are we talking about at the flange ? Can 500° Permatex "Ultra Grey Gasket Maker" work ? (I happen to have the grey...but now remember Permatex has a 700° "Ultra Copper" too)

It looks like I can get the old gasket off the riser...I can order a new one too, but was wondering if this 500 or 700° Permatex can be used to coat an existing gasket, or even used alone ?
