Universal M25 defect?

My Universal M25 diesel failed. Catastrophic valve failure.

Look at the attached photo please. I found a casting anomally right on the broken valve.

HAS ANYONE ENCOUNTERED A CASTING FAILURE IN THE UNIVERSAL M25?

Re: Universal M25 defect?

Bummer for sure. What were the operating conditions and how many hours on it? Sure looks like the intake valve broke off a chunk. Was any other debris found in the combustion chamber? I imagine the piston top is pretty beat up also. How 's the cylinder?
Good luck with the rebuild.

Re: Universal M25 defect?

It could have been a flaw in the original forging of the valve, or it could have been a foreign particle which entered the engine and landed on the valve seat and caused a stress riser in the valve, or maybe something as simple as running the valve clearance too loose, allowing the valve to drop sharply on the seat instead of seating softly on the closing ramp on the cam. This could cause fatigue in the valve leading to a failure.

Gonna need some good detective work....

Re: Universal M25 defect?

The appearance of corrosion on the surface and edges of the valve and the cylinder head in the subject cylinder, compared to the adjacent cylinder suggests that perhaps there was sea water intrusion into this cylinder. This could cause pitting and localized stress risers with subsequent failure.

The lower edge of the valve failure appears to be eminating directly from a corrosion pit.

Re: Universal M25 defect?

A mechanical engineer looked at the pit where the valve piece broke off.

There is a spec in the photo that looks white. It may be a casting anomaly.

I am asking if ANYONE has heard anything about this...

That's an old engine with a good record. I've not heard of this being a problem. Only real standout is the know heat exchanger problem.
