Universal M50 diesel engine

A while back, someone gave me a Universal M50 diesel engine as a basket case. I found the Kubota block number and completely rebuilt the engine (new injectors, pistons, reground crank, valves, guides gaskets, overhauled the Oberdorfer seawater pump and pretty much went through the entire engine. The Universal M50 is a marinized Kubota V1902 engine, and I'm told they were the standard engine for skid steer loaders for about 30 years or so. Engine is built like a tank. But I'm wondering if anyone has actual experience with the Universal M50. I know that it's an older design but all parts were readily available and fairly cheap (Not through Universal-they were completely out of budget). Do I have a good engine, or should I try it and look for another? Anyone?

Re: Universal M50 diesel engine

Engine should be fine. If it was used in industrial applications it's probably a long running engine in marine use. Industrial users expect engines to last indefinitely. And parts are cheaper from tractor/industrial dealers. Parts should be available world wide.

Re: Universal M50 diesel engine

Our Nanni marinized V-1903 has been completely satisfactory for us. Around 5000 hours now, still going well. I believe this is essentially the same engine as the V-1902.
