Velvet Drive Identification

Anyone have tips on how to identify a Borg Warner Velvet Drive transmission. This one has no tag, doesn't look like it ever had one since there are no remnants of the rivet used to hold the ID plate or hoes where they would mount.
It's an 86 vintage attached to a 1986 4108 Perkins.
I'd like to rebuild it while I have it out of the boat and need to identify it to order a rebuild kit.

Re: Velvet Drive Identification

My Cheoy Lee has CR2 transmissions. Different model boat, but may be a clue.

You also could call Hale Marine. I found them to be very helpful and knowledgable when trying to work out the same with my boat.

Thanks for the heads up.
What motor do you have in your Cheoy Lee, and what year?

Velvet drives have been around since the 50's, in many configurations, but they usually pair the particular models with similar motors. So if your was close in model year and with the same motor it's probably the same transmission. I'll give Hale marine tomorrow to see if they have any insight into the model I have.
If I can get it right I'll stamp the information into the motor mount ear the tag usually resides on.

Re: Velvet Drive Identification

Provide a photo. Provide the Length of the transmission. Measure the gear reduction using a photo tach for the engine crank RPM and prop shaft RPM and dividing the crank speed by the prop shaft RPM. This will allow an identification.

Re: Velvet Drive Identification

I had a velvet drive behind a Westerbeke diesel, can't remember the hp, around 50 I think. I'm guessing an 80's vintage.

If you google 80's vintage Westerbeke diesels you'll find several photo's of this drive, some with the id plate visible.
