Velvet Drive Runs Forward in Reverse?

Hello the brochure says that lever must be forward to go forward. If set up the other way round it has been installed incorrectly. So how do I adjust it?

'serious transmission failure can occur if drive is in reverse to go forward'.

Im a standard engine and RH prop btw

thanks in advance form a worried skipper!

Re: Velvet Drive Runs Forward in Reverse?

Not close to enough information

right hand prop with left hand engine ?
right hand prop with left hand gear ?
prop installed backwards ?
separate shift cable or combined with throttle ?
2 station helm ?
what happened between when it last worked and now ?

you don't adjust it, you either put on the correct prop, or the correct engine (rotation speaking)

"... Changing the pump indexing is done by removing the 4 bolts holding the pump to the transmission face plate, rotating the pump 180 degrees and replacing the bolts. It is not necessary to remove the pump only to spin it around. There are only two pump placements there all 4 bolt holes will line up..."

Re: Velvet Drive Runs Forward in Reverse?

Not wanting to sound simple, but are you looking at the lever on the transmission? Which way your shifting lever in the cockpit/wheelhouse/helm station moves when shifting is not a factor. The type of push-pull connection, routing, etc. can easily reverse this by the time it gets to the transmission. If you already have then never mind, my apologies, but otherwise check the lever on the transmission itself.

Re: Velvet Drive Runs Forward in Reverse?

Do the simple things first. Check the connection as Dsanduril suggested. Then, check the prop to see if you have the right handed prop for your drive.

Then, if that doesn't take care of the problem then get a Velvet Drive manual and read it thoroughly before tearing into the transmission housing. You can set your transmission up as Gord suggestion to match a left rotating or right rotating engine.

Re: Velvet Drive Runs Forward in Reverse?

I'll attempt to address all your very helpful points :

1 RH prop, RH engine. so box must be LH
2 separate throttle and F-N-R cockpit levers
3 all my observations refer to the twiddly lillte lever on the box
4 single helm
5 unit came combined off another boat. i can only assume it was never gievne the reindexation it needed, or the prior boat had LH prop. it was a single engine installation.
6 it actually works and worked fine, but because the Reverse clutch is for occasional use it is smaller and overheats / slips after 6 or so hours of driving the boat forward!!!

I shall now look at Gord Mays links !

many thanks for all your inputs folks

Re: Velvet Drive Runs Forward in Reverse?

Ok. Here's a test.

Does your prop shaft turn the same direction as your engine rotates while you are in forward? If it does not then you might have a counter rotating Velvet Drive trans and all you need to do is change your prop. Does your Velvet Drive have any numbers or letters on it it at all? If the last of the numbers ends in an R then it could be the counter rotating trans.

Good luck in sorting this out. As Gord says you can set up your trans to accept either a clockwise or counter clockwise rotating engine but changing input and output shaft spin is a bit different animal. You just gotta get the manual and talk with the old timey Velvet Drive folks.

kind regards,
