Volvo 2003 Engine - Prop Info Wanted

I recently purchased a sailboat that has a Volvo 2003 series engine installed, built in 1985, however the boat is missing its propeller - I'm looking for information on what sort of props boat owners are using?

The sailboat is a 35' Pretorien, which has a fin keel and skeg rudder, and weighs about 15k lbs. I think the original prop may have been about 16" in diameter, but I don't know the pitch. I've also been considering feathering props - What are considered reliable brands?

From previous experience I know it can take some trial and error to get the right diameterXpitch, even after you run the programs and do the calculations - So I would appreciate input from others!

Thanks,
Ross

Re: Volvo 2003 engine - Prop info wanted

I have a two bladed prop that came with my CS36M and it's original Volvo 2003 engine in 1988. Unfortunately it's in my basement in Toronto and I am in Miami right now waiting to cross to the Bahamas and will not be home until late May. If you are still interested in May pm me and I can ship it to you. Your boat and my CS36 are similar in design and weight.

Ross, there are a couple of gearbox options available on the 2003 engine, so you need to know which one you have before considering propellor calculations. It should be written on a brass label on the the gearbox.

There are on line prop calculators to help yo work out your choice of prop. Note: you need to take into account prop tip clearance to the hull as well.

Not a bad engine despite what you might read on here.

If it has FWC I would agree. The 2002 had FWC only as an option when new, don't know if the 2003 was sold the same way. I have a 2002 that unfortunately was not FWC and now I have to replace it.

I have an '85 finnyacht 35 that came with a 2003 and a 16 x 13.5 folding gori.
I repowered with a d1-30 with a MS15 transmisison and kept the same prop
It seems well matched to my boat.
It a fin keel sloop, 11000 lb race/cruiser class.
