Volvo D1-20

Hello everyone, new to the forum. Looking into getting a sailboat that has some problems with the engine (D1-20F connected to 130S). Are the parts of D1 20A/B interchangeable with the F version? What are the differences between these models (A/B/F)? I seem not to be able to find this information on the internet. Thanks for the help.

Re: Volvo D1-20

The readily discernible differences between the A/B and F models are the governing system and the electrical system.
- Electrical- The A/B model used an electrical system similar to the preceding 2020 model, that is, individual senders driving individual gages where the sender is connected to the gage by its own individual wire. The wiring harness between the engine and the instrument panel contains 16 wires, one for temp alarm, one for oil alarm, two for tach sender, numerous for key switch, etc. The F model engine uses the MDI (mechanical diesel interface) system where the engine is connected to the gages/control panel by a can bus system where all the engine data is flowing on a two wire can bus system. Some of the senders and switches used are common to both systems, but instrumentation is not interchangeable.

-Governing system- The governor design was changed on the F engine, probably driven by emission requirements as found on the underlying industrial application engines. This means the internal governor parts are different between the models and the front engine cover is different between the two as well.

There might be a few other parts that are different between the models, but that will require an in-depth parts book comparison.

Hope this helps.
