Volvo D2-40 MDI box Solution

Hi All, just wanted to share a Video of a project I am using to safely get around the Volvo MDI box fragility that was based on Sailing Athena/"Sail Life" channel. The boxes allow independent starting with full low/high oil pressure alarming and (configurable) high temperature alerting and monitoring as well. Was pretty easy... 3 of the smaller Bosh relays, 1 100A relay, Amazon temperature monitor with threshold circuit energizing, an alarm buzzer, and a switch with guard to arm the system and a plastic box. When you energize the system with the arm switch the buzzer activates and then when you start the engine with the start switch, and the oil pressure comes up to range the alert silences and the alternator is energized. The alarm will stay silenced unless the oil pressure goes too low/high or the water temperature gets too high (configurable). It also de-energizes the alternator when the oil pressure drops so you can't forget to shut it off. Another thing the OEM volvo indication does poorly is makes it very easy to leave the system "on" and the alternator energized, melting your expensive alternator. This one the alternator is energized only if there is positive oil pressure.

Ok, never mind, vbullitin said "Video Upload not allowed" Guess you will have to imaging how it is done.... nice.

The oil pressure references for the pressure gauge and alarm come from an under filter adapter platte that has multiple reference ports.

Re: Volvo D2-40 MDI box Solution

I have a D2-55, and this is exactly what I am in the process of building. If someone else has it, that can make my job easier. I want a system completly independent of the VP factory system. My factory system works fine now, but when it fails, I want a plan B backup all installed.

My plan B would have its own temp and pressure sensors connected to a control box that actually shuts down the engine if a warning occurs. I know it can be easily done, as I am an electrical engineer. But if someone else has done it, let us know.

Put the video on youtube and direct us on where it is.

Hi Danno,

I don't have my video for my boxes uploaded to Youtube to link here, but my work was abased on this effort (schematic attached, video details includes parts list in the video information or on his website), I just added an oil pressure gauge and used another port on the oil filter adapter.

Obviously all this stuff is for the Volvo D2-40F (thinking oil pressure sending unit range and the oil filter adapter) so you would need to see if that adapter plate would work on yours but I think there is a good chance it would.

Re: Volvo D2-40 MDI box Solution

This is good. It is very similar to what I will be doing. The main difference is I want the engine to stop wtih low oil pressure or high temperature. There could be times when I might not be on the boat, but want the engines running to recharge the battery. A horn means nothing when nobody is present who knows what to do.

I will need to work on the delay during start up to allow the engine to start with low oil pressure.

I was not aware of that adapter plate for the oil pressure sensor. I assumed I would put a "T" in the line to the existing oil pressure sensor so I can get two of them on the same opening. I was also considering a "T" for the temp sensor. I will reconsider all of these thoughts.
