Volvo Penta 2002 Idle Ajustment

Does anybody know how to adjust the idle on a Volvo Penta 2002? I know the Idle should be around the 800rpm or so and mine is too low causing excessive vibration in idle. I checked the manual and there is no information on it there.

Thanks

If you watch this carefully you see him move the throttle lever in this video. There will be a stop bolt which can be adjusted. Make sure you are adjusting the throttle and not the cold start cable which is slightly higher up.

Although this is the 2003 engine the 2002 series are the same. Adjust when the engine is warm.

Re: Volvo Penta 2002 Idle Ajustment

They rarely need adjustment so has something recently changed?

Have a good look at the throttle cables and make sure they are in good condition, the engine mounts which don't last forever and might be split and finally is the fuel tank spotlessly clean. Worth spending 30 minutes with a torch just checking everything including possible fuel leaks etc.

Not bad engines, ours is a VP2003 and now 30 years old. Hoping it will go on for a few more yet.

Yes, recently had a rope around the prop shaft and since then the engine runs rough in idle. I did notice that idle was just under 1000 rpm pre rope and now its just above 500. When power is applied there is no vibration and engine runs smoothly.

Before I went fiddling with the settings I would look very hard for a problem related to the line on the prop. That surely did NOT change the idle speed setting on the injection pump.

Alignment, transmission, lots of other places to rule out before you touch that setting.

When my 2003 started idling poorly it turned out to be a hidden crack in an engine mount.

My 2003 does an insane hoochie coochie at low idle. I've replaced the engine mounts but still had an aft port bracket bust.

Pete7 has the right solution. I've had to set my low idle above the shimmyshake point.

I wonder if in the act of picking up a rope the rubber engine mounts have split. Difficult to tell with the weight of the engine on them, but use a crow bar and a few blocks of wood to lift up to see what moves.

Re: Volvo Penta 2002 Idle Ajustment

I have seen more than a few motors that idle was determined by cable throw and not the stop screw like it ought to be. Just a simple matter of cable adjustment, but they are prone to idle changes if the motor moves at all.
I’d say it’s likely that the rope incident may have moved something, and that an alignment check is also in order.

I also had a VP2002, and it would dance a jig at idle. Drove me nuts. The whole engine hopping around down there like a maniac. A few rpm, and it settled down nicely.
