Volvo Penta 2003 alternator/starter problem

Hi all,

After recently arriving at a new anchorage I discovered the salt water hoses to my heat exchanger where leaking and my alternator has been splashed with salt water and some wires corroded and come apart with one wire to the positive alternator terminal basically disappearing a smaller one not from the battery that’s intact and Not damaged. Anyone have any ideas where the two smaller wires go on the engine ? It’s a delco alternator. I know it’s a general question miss some info but any help would be appreciated. At this point I can’t start my engine.

Re: Volvo Penta 2003 alternator/starter problem

A long time ago, I was helping a fellow that had a Volvo engine. I don’t remember which model. We wanted to start the engine with the alternator physically mounted, but disconnected electrically. No go. After an hour of going through the diagrams, we found that there was a starter relay that was GROUNDED via a pin on the alternator. Without that connection the engine wouldn’t crank. My guess was that by connecting the start relay to that point, the relay was grounded when the motor was NOT running, but was at +12v once the engine started. That would keep you from trying to engage the starter when the engine was running.

Something like that would match your problem description.

Here is the wiring diagram, assuming you have the factory setup. It will be different if you have an external regulator
