Volvo penta md17c reverse gear msb

Good morning,
I have a volvo MD17c with an MSB reverse gear. The gear has stopped engaging in forward. The gear has been removed and the shop is telling me the cone shaped liner in the gear has gone bad and is no longer available. Ultimately this is starting to look extremely expensive as the gear cannot be rebuilt. Has anyone run into this with good result? What did you find and do to for a solution. Any help would be so appreciated.

I have a used ms gear from 1978 that works great and most of the rest of the motor if you are in need of any other "green Dream" parts. If you are interested, PM me.

The gear can be rebuilt. Take it to a good brake shop and they can glue a lining in and machine to suit. I have had it done years ago.

Hi Richard,
Thank you for explaining how to reline the cones on an MSB. Two questions:
1. Did you reline both the male cone surfaces AND the forward & reverse female cones?
2. How thick was the applied lining?

Hi Larry,

The male cone was never lined.
I don't know the thickness, but Volvo should be able to advise.
The company that did this for me was Fenquin. <fenquin.com.au> but remember this was around 20 yrs ago. Would still be worth asking them though.

I can't figure out how to do a PM.
I copied this from another thread but I hope to find a machine shop that can insert friction lining, I have a smooth clutch, I have not seen the lining listed for sale- do other Volvos use this? I am MSB for MD11 1.91:1 both= 838162 forward 893623 reverse 839625

There were two different gear boxes back then that were very similar, the
MS and the MSB.

The MS came first and had a brass shift cone and no friction material on the steel gear cup.
The MSB came with a smooth steel (iron?) shift cone and friction material bonded into the steel gear cup surface.

Attached is a drawing of the gear cup with friction material applied.

thank you !!!!!! exactly what I needed, I have hope again, have searched for months for a replacement gear, lots of the angle transmission type in the junkyards and ebay but all of the MSB have been cannibalized already, now to find a Swedish brake liner

I have the later model MSB with smooth cone, any suggestions where I can buy the obsolete gasket and oring kit? thanks again
