Volvo penta shaft seal overheat

I have installed a new Volvo penta look alike shaft seal , but it overheats on the lip.

It hasn't produce steam , but within an hour it's really hot to the touch , I have apply lubricant and add a hose for the vent .

Are those seals suppose to heat ?

The seal doesn't leak , there are not alignment issues ,.

What manufactorer? I have a Volvo seal, not heating, I get only dust in the bilge. Just needs a bit of grease for the innner lip, outer lip is water lubricated.
Was your shaft clean and shining where the lips are positioned?

Did you burp it?
Did you use the lubricant provided?

I have a Volvo seal. No heat at all, no drips - I use Volvo recommended grease to lube once a year, burp it at launch in spring and that’s it.
I’d also like to know the brand name you installed

I don't know anything about the Volvo Penta shaft seal but it is not supposed to be water injected like the Tides shaft seal is it?

Nothing blocking water from flowing through the cutlass bearing?

But you are not Robinson Crusoe as others have reported the problem.

I think it takes air from the intake for lube :/

Re: Volvo penta shaft seal overheat

Did you include the metal bearing to prevent the disforming of the rubber they deliver with it ?

If you mean the mounting protection yes , there wasn't any other part in the box .

Re: Volvo penta shaft seal overheat

Ah that wat its called in English I almost forgot it ,found it at the bottom of the box , did change the sealing last year no heating problem ,I suppose the water can get trough from the intake outside trough the shaftbearing .

Re: Volvo penta shaft seal overheat

When you put to much grease into the sealing you drive it into the shaftbearing by burping it and wather cannot get trough .

Re: Volvo penta shaft seal overheat

After further investigation , I notice that , no matter what I do there is no water coming on the seal side , and that's why the shaft overheats .

It might be too much grease ??

Re: Volvo penta shaft seal overheat

Opening the oil intake , and burping the seal at the same time I manage to get water everywhere , there is no continues flow from the shaft bearing to the lip of the seal , which is weird .

After the burping temperature is significantly lower but still testing .

Re: Volvo penta shaft seal overheat

Hi - sorry to open a sightly old thread, I'm having a similar problem having replaced my Volvo shaft seal, the shaft seems to get quite warm at the seal. The old one was fine. One thing I could not work out when installing was how to install the flat metal plate, the old seal didn't have one so I didn't bother fitting, have missed something obvious ?
