VP 2030 - Perkins 103-10/M30

Hi everybody

Oil level is rising on my VP 2030. (app. 1000 running hours)

I now know, that it is diesel oil and i started out by changing my lift pump.

Oil level is still rising, and i now suspect my injection pump.

Is the injection pump the right place to go from here?

These pumps are extremely expensive, but i have found a Perkins 103-10 injection pump.

http://www.ebay.de/itm/Einspritzpumpe-Perkins-Motor-103-10-in-Weidemann-Hoflader-SCHAEFF-JCB-CASE-ATLAS-/330906753256

Does this fit my engine (md2030) with no modifications?

Thank you in advance

If you're sure it's a 103-10, it will likely work (there are some model variations). The actual ISM model you have will usually be cast into the block on the alternator side, just aft of and between the two front engine mount bolt holes.

If you take your pump to a diesel injection shop, preferably one that specializes in ag or truck service, they will be able to test and rebuild your pump, thereby insuring that you have the right one for your engine--and if you find the right shop--hopefully for about half the price of new...

Injector pump is a potential source of the leak, but unless the pump body is cracked, you dont likely need a whole new pump (esp at only 1,000 hours). Likely nothing more than a bad seal. I suggest pulling the pump and injectors and taking them to a diesel lab for testing before you start replacing expensive components on an educated guess.

With only 1,000 hours, unless something exceptional happened, I doubt youve got any bad major components on that engine. Similar problem on my engine (MD2020, ~16 years and 4,500 hours) last year. I torn down the lift pump and the diaphram was just fine. Took injector pump and injectors to a diesel lab (time to get them all serviced anyway). They rebuilt all of them for way less than what a totally new pump would have cost (of course, Im not in the USA so costs are lower).

Re: VP 2030 - Perkins 103-10/M30

A few suggestions for removal/install of the MD series injector pump.

The control linkage to the pump is held in place by a very tiny clip...which would be very easy to drop into the engine. I hitch a small piece of line thru the looped head before pulling to avoid dropping it...and leave it attached until its completely reinstalled.

On reinstall be sure the pump is seated true before you start to torque the bolts or you may crack the pump body or damage other components. This is harder than it sounds because of the pressure from the springs in pump.

The threaded studs that secure the pump are of relatively weak material and easy to break. Fortunately they are usually also easy to replace.

The thin metal shim between the pump and the engine is very important, it sets pump timing, ...treat it gently and store it carefully.

If you dont have already, get a good torque wrench...the pump bolts and injectors are all critical torque items. Click type torque wrench is more convenient for working in cramped spaces, but be very sure you have it adjusted properly and it is workimg properly by testing it before making a critical torque. An old bolt in a vice is a good test bed.

Replace copper washers between injectors and block with new before reinstall.
