Water temp gauge for Yanmar 4je

I have a well used Yanmar 4JH-TE in my 1987 C&C 44. I have the "idiot light" panel rather than the full gauges panel (unfortunately). The only gauge the idiot light panel has is the rpm gauge....no water temp, no oil temp, no oil pressure, etc.

I would like to add a water temp gauge. I have purchased the proper Yanmar water temp gauge and figured out a good mount location. Now I'm wondering what sensor and where it goes for the signal to the gauge. Anyone have any experience or suggestions for what sensor and where it's plumbed in?

Thanks in advance.

My (2x) 4JH4E come with "B type" panel, its seems to me you want "C type" panel. Everything is well explained in the yanmar doc. The harness that come with my engines have the options (cables) for a C type. So all I would need is new panel, new probes, and yanmar doc for proper connection. Hope this helps....

I don't know if this helps but in the 4JH2 engine it goes near the thermostat cover.

Re: Water temp gauge for Yanmar 4je

Got it, thank you gents, this is helpful. I'll start poking around in the area of the thermostat cover and see what's there. No doubt there's some water temp sensor of some kind for the idiot light already plumbed in......just need to update/switch/change for a sensor which is compatible with the Yanmar temp gauge.

Thanks again.

Re: Water temp gauge for Yanmar 4je

Yes, there is a seperate temperature switch sensor for the idiot light (see above diagram) and you will almost certainly have a blanked port for the temperature gauge sensor.

You can buy a combined switch and gauge sensor but it will take a little searching.

You will find Yanmar uses BSP threads and most north american stuff is NPT. I'm sure there are adapters but from experience (and advice from others), a similar sized male NPT thread will fit into a female BSP port provided you use some thread sealant. However the reverse is not true - don't try a female NPT with a male BSP - ends in tears.

I have a full wiring diagram for the "C" panel on the boat. Maybe "B" as well. But it will be 2 weeks until I get there. We had a whole new panel made for our boat.
