Westerbeke 71C Raw Water Pump

As most everyone knows, Westerbeke is not forthcoming with a part number cross reference. For our engine, the water pump">raw water pump is PN 038445. A mechanical drawing is below. Westerbeke's price for this is $1,080.90. Does this pump assembly look familiar to anyone here? I'm confident that if/when I identify the manufacturer & model, I will be able to by two for the price of one from Westerbeke.

Is it not rebuildable? normally you can get seals & bearings for them at any bearing supply.
May need to go to a specialist seal place for mechanical seal.

Depco can probably id the pump.
Depco Pump Company

The pump shown is on a pedestal. Is it engine mounted or belt drive? If belt, any pump with same size ports and impeller will do.

I rebuild my pumps and get the bearings and seals online.

Here's an online site that had a pump that worked for my small Westerbeke.

Good Luck

Thank you everyone for your replies! My wife and I plan to do some extended cruising, and I'm thinking that a spare pump will be a good thing to have just in case. I'm so glad that I am able to ask questions and offer advice to others. Our pooled knowledge is priceless!

As others have mentioned, you can get the pump from Sherwood. I bought one last year for my Westerbeke 40. And I'm prepared to sell it in about three weeks if anyone is interested, because I'm re-powering with BetaMarine next month.

You will love the BetaMarine. I purchased one for our Cal 2-27 at the boat show">Miami Boat Show from Stanley Feiganbaum in 2004. Most all parts are readily available from your Kubota dealer.

PM me with a photo and details when you are ready to sell the Sherwood pump.

Beware! Westerbeke has been known to modify the foot of the pump to align with the bracket so it can be aligned with the drive belt. Rather than build a bracket that has the correct base alignment they protect their spare parts sales by modifying the part, even when they buy it from another company like Johnson, etc.

I also recommend Depco -their technicians really know their stuff plus they usually stock OEM (parts & whole pumps) as well as off the shelf non OEM replacements. As an example, I called them about my Johnson RWP -service records showed PO had been replacing every 2-3 yrs due to oil seal leak. Technician knew all the issues, recited the number of iterations of that model and crafted a work around for my pumps when they rebuilt them -so far no leaks at all after 500 hrs.

If it helps much, I’ve got the 63C and am running a Sherwood pump.

Re: Westerbeke 71C Raw Water Pump

Does anyone here have experience with both the Westerbeke 038445 and the Sherwood R10870G?? I'm very curious if they are "truly" the same (ie. does westerbeke just rebrand the Sherwood pump and double the price)? I'm also interested to hear from those who've used the Sherwood Pump (ie. is it working well; lasting an appropriate duration; etc.)?

My Westerbeke 55A IV engine had a Westerbeke 038445 raw water pump I replaced. That pump IS a Sherwood R10870G BUT the pedestal DID have to have to be modified to fit the needlessly custom Westerbeke bracket. A local machinist matched the original by cutting a rabbet notch along both of the long sides. Took him about 1/2 hour & cost me $50. I saved $900 by buying the Sherwood pump online. Hopefully I won’t be blackballed by Westerbeke next time I actually do need to buy a part from them for the 55A, which I’m told is a marinized Mitsubishi L2 or L3 tractor engine but don’t quote me on that since I haven’t confirmed it. I hear folks do buy Mitsubishi parts for this & other Westerbekes from tractor part suppliers for 1/4 the price, but they say never to mention the part is for a Westerbeke or the Mitsubishi part will suddenly become unavailable. You own a tractor

If all else fails, call Depco Pump in FL. They have a wealth of knowledge about these pumps and have most direct replacements in stock. I send mine in for rebuild every few years and maintain a spare for JD mains & Westebeke generator. My new pumps from there are half the price u quoted

Re: Westerbeke 71C Raw Water Pump

Depco pump appears to be a distributor for other pump companies, not a manufacturer. They do seem to carry the Sherwood R10870G pump, as do many online distributors. Lowest prices for that pump I found were about $600 but availability is tight. Westerbeke charges nearly $1500. I bought mine from marinepumpdirect.com, & it was drop-shipped from Sherwood in 2 days .
