I have a 44 hp Westerbeke, mine is a 44B. Has S4L2 cast on block because it's a Mitsubishi block. See if you can find a casting number on it.

Re: Westerbeke W33 block origin?

I thought this was a 44b but I can't find it on the block.

Re: Westerbeke W33 block origin?

I will guarantee that's a Mitsubishi block as I just had mine torn down to where you are.

Based on the tag is 1.8L (actual on S4L2 block is 1.758L) so that would equate to 107.3 cu in.

So a 44A or 44B is likely candidate from above posted literature. Mine is only good for 3000 rpm so it looks like I'd agree a 44A is most probable.

But if you check the parts diagram, the 44A/B share the same block. Not sure why yours doesn't have casting marks though. Check the head STB side near the aft injectors and see if you see S4L cast into head?

Re: Westerbeke W33 block origin?

Lastly, this is all I could find without going out in the freezing cold to check. BUt if you squint, it sure looks like our labels are the same except mine is 2002 (vs your 1999) and mine is 3000 RPM vs 3600RPM.

So that would lead me to believe yours is the previous model to mine and would following the naming structure from Westerbeke.

So I'd say you likely have an S4L2 block. I have all the factory service manuals if you want to PM me your email I can send you a Drive link.

EDIT: there are a ton of parts available on eBay, this was a very common block used in all sorts of forklifts, CAT mini-excavator, Toro groundmaster mower etc. I've found most of my parts on eBay like gasket sets etc.

Re: Westerbeke W33 block origin?

Old thread but an update for anyone who is interested.
The Westerbeke 33A is definitely a Mitsubishi KE 150 block as is the Vetus 4.14.
Here’s a pic of my block with the model number in the casting.

Re: Westerbeke W33 block origin?

The 33a engine was also used in the Mitsubishi Mighty Max pickup truck, I bought a starter and water pump at greatly reduced price and they fit and worked fine
