Re: Westerbeke W46 Replacement

I share your distaste for common rail engines, however, my antipathy towards Technodrive comes from dealing with multiple failures of both their saildrives and their regular reversing gearboxes. I’m happy to hear that you’ve had a good run out of your gearbox. Betamarine have been excellent to deal with, no complaints at all regarding the company or tech support

This is true, Beta will install any transmission or sail drive make or model that you desire on your new Beta engine. They also provide adaptor kits to allow you to install customer supplied transmissions. E.G., Rebuilt Velvet Drive or Paragon transmission and also Walter gear combinations.

Beta will let you choose other gearboxes. I really like my Beta 50 btw. A recent charter with a common rail Yanmar validated my choice of Beta over Yanmar (the charter Yanmar 4jh45 just died one day for no reason while motoring. Started right back up but the fact that the ECU or something just decided to kill it randomly is disturbing)
1000 hours is only a good start. My Hurth HBW150V lasted 20 years and about 8000 hours.

The only thing wrong in the end was a leaky output shaft that defied two attempts at speedy sleeve repairs. Maybe the bearings were worn. They are so expensive to repair that I chose to replace it.

Re: Westerbeke W46 Replacement

I replaced my Westerbeke with a Beta. I love it. Service from Beta is outstanding, engine runs smoothly, it's all good.

Re: Westerbeke W46 Replacement

The best place for reasonably-priced Westerbeke parts is parts4engines.com. Just my experience. Four years ago I replaced a Westerbeke W-40 with a brand new D2-50F Volvo Penta. I got a spectacular price from a Volvo dealer in England ($10200. delivered to my marina in Indiantown Fl.). Wish I had gone with a Beta engine. The Volvo runs absolutely great. Volvo tech support is non-existent. Parts & services are outrageously priced.

We have a Beta and love everything about it. Great, yet simple engine with exceptional customer service.

I got a Twin Disc 60 on my 40 Hp Isuzu...they are simple gearboxes and very easy to maintain .
DONE 800hr ..
Like all mechanical contraptions keep up the maintenance.
