What is the best oil for a Hurth Transmission

I gather that ATF fluid is what is generally used. Any specific type or ideas as to the best oil ?

Same question should apply to the motor ?

I am using Amsoil synthetic ATF in my BWVelvet Drive. The heat reduction has been quite significant. With hydraulic boxes, heat is a killer to them. The cooler you can keep the oil, the more miles the thing will run for.
Is the Nanni under any Warranty? If it is, make sure you use the oil the manufacturer specifies. If it is out of warranty, then a good quality Deisel oil. Depending on your climate, a normal 24W40 would be fine. But if you experiance extreme cold, then a 10W30 or 40 will be a good choice. Once again, I use Amsoil 20W40 in my Perkins 6.354. It has made the engien much quiter. Shell Rimula and Castrol Magnetec are also good oils. Valvoline made a high performance Deisel oil as well. There are heaps on the market, just make sure you get a real good rating and don't penny pinch. Good oils tend to be the more expensive ones.

I also run Synthi in everything, but not the Herth, I have a trawler that has a hurth in it , that slips if i use Synth in it ,so I only use reg ATF in it ,

See my thread (http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ures-8248.html) regarding Hurth trans. I've started using Amsoil Synthetic (Dexron III equivalent) ATF in my THIRD transmission (Hurth calls for Dexron III in the M15A trans) - don't have many hours on this trans, so is too early to tell, but probably won't be worse that using regular Dexron III. I also installed the 'optional' trans cooler (actually a heat sink that bolts on the side of the trans with cooling water flowing through the heat sink), even though my application (Kubota 4 cyl - 37.5 HP) doesn't require the cooler (at least according to the Hurth/ZF specs). Wish you a lot better luck than I've had with Hurth/ZF products.

Looks like I will try synthetic oil in both units and see what happens with the transmission.

Tom - Ouch, that was not an experience that should be repeated.

The last time I rebuilt my HB 150 the dealer said NOT to use synthetic oil because it was "too slippery" and would cause the friction plates to slip.

It could actually.
If we are talking oil and not ATF, many motorcycles wet clutches will slip if automotive Syn oil is used. In the search for less friction to increase fuel mileage, good oil has gotten very slippery.
If we are talking ATF, way back in the day there was essentially two different ones, the Ford ATF was less slippery than the GM one, so if you built performance transmissions it was common to run Ford type ATF even in a GM transmission.
I don’t know about today, but your right, if you have a wet clutch, real slippery oil can make it slip.

Re: What is the best oil for a Hurth Transmission

If your engine or transmission did not start out with synthetic oil, don't change to it mid-stream or you are likely to find yourself with unexplained leakage. The Hurth likes/needs ATF-A. Attached is a snap of ours (I hope) and the ATF-A placard is fairly visible.

FWIW...
