What is this metal thing in the bottom of my engine oil pan?

Found this chunk of metal in the bottom of my Beta Marine 28 oil pan built 2000 that ran just fine, and the cylinders are clean. I was just going to replace gaskets and seals and found this, now I guess i have to do full rebuild and hopefully find out where it came from. Any ideas?

Also found a 1/4" hole drilled into the transmission covered with a dab of sealant. Not sure about that either...

Re: What is this metal thing in the bottom of my engine oil pan?

Can you tell if the bit looks like it was broken off something else or machined to its current shape? And wh at metal is it?

Looks like half round stock, chipped off. I'd say if it was a full round diamter it would be 1/2" wide. Hardened steel? The end has been chamfered...some sort of pin or dowel?

Is the broken part cast iron or steel? Looks like part of the timing gear that drives the water pump">raw water pump. Pull it off and see if a piece is missing.

Re: What is this metal thing in the bottom of my engine oil pan?

There was a service bulletin some years ago concerning Kubota D1005 engines.
This is the Kubota engine model that was used by Beta Marine when building a Beta 28, or the earlier Beta BD1005. The bulletin noted that the camshaft end may break, due to a reinforcing sleeve omitted when Kubota built the engine. Remove the raw water pump and see if the end of the camshaft is missing the part you found. Joe

A cam shaft end, on the list of bets of "what's this thing in my oil pan"
Any other guesses?
However I game it, the bottom line is I have to take apart the whole engine now to check everything, easier said than done in a wet cold muddy boatyard!

Re: What is this metal thing in the bottom of my engine oil pan?

Looking at the film, I think I'm seeing that one side of the half-moon piece is rough and fractured. There's only a tiny dent. If that's all true, that's really good hardened steel, so the cam shaft idea gets support. Perhaps not tear down the whole engine, but go as far as the cam shaft and see if that's the problem.

Hey, you and I are at about 30 degrees north, and today is terrible at 54 degrees and cloudy. Think about the people who get to do this in Nova Scotia....

Well if it’s part of a gear then the other sides then I expect it should show wear from tooth engagement

Re: What is this metal thing in the bottom of my engine oil pan?

If it is a part of the engine, or not, still requires full rebuild to 1-determine that question and 2- see what else is out of spec , a

If it is a camshaft i have to check if the notice Engine Man kindly referred to is fiixable, if not then time for another engine i guess,

So far the head, cylinders, valves etc look fine,

Re: What is this metal thing in the bottom of my engine oil pan?

Your engine can be repaired by Replacing the camshaft , assuming I am correct concerning the camshaft end. See the service bulletin below. Joe

Re: What is this metal thing in the bottom of my engine oil pan?

This hole may have been made to allow penetrating oil to be sprayed onto the transmission input shaft spline. Older, rusty engines sometimes require this action to allow removal of the trans from the engine. Joe

Re: What is this metal thing in the bottom of my engine oil pan?

hard to tell from the photo....but it appears there is a small diameter threaded hole in that little piece....I'd look for a similar piece somewhere on the engine...ie, it may be one side of an " attachment" ???
