Where can I get oil filters for my Yanmar 4JH45?

Where is the best place to order parts (oil filters right now) for my Yanmar 4JH45?

Google is being unhelpful, as online parts sales don't list this newer engine (or the online retailer won't ship to my location). Yanmar USA site list local dealers who don't offer online sales.

And I can't seem to figure out the proper oil filter size to order it separately despite rereading the operator's guide. The actual filter attached to the engine has all the info written in Japanese.

Any tips?

Go to either Fram or NAPA's site and look for oil filter page.

There are only 4 different size threads - 2 US and 2 Metric.

You will first need to determine the thread dimensions.

Other than the thread size, you should measure the sealing o-ring dimension, the outside diameter of the filter canister, and the overall length of the canister.

Then look down the list for the thread size, then check the other dimensions.

If you have room, you can use a filter with a larger canister diameter and length.

The NAPA people in the store should be able to help you out.

Good luck!

Boatswains Locker is the California Distributor for Yanmar parts, authorized dealers get their parts from them. Scroll down the page for Yanmar dealers in California.
Authorized Dealers
Yanmar tends to use same oil filter for all 4 cylinder engines, Catalina Direct has the filter I think, but shipping may be as much as the filter.
Catalina Direct: Engine Lube Oil Filter Yanmar 4 Cylinder Engines
Any NAPA will have or can get WIX filters for oil and fuel, the closer to a harbor the more marine Parts in stock. Even when I use one in a farming area they can always order what I need.
I use an Auto/Marine parts store, Orange Engine, located slightly inland from the harbor, they carry Racor, and WIX filters for all applications, Impellors, hoses etc. look for something similar, Ask one of the paid mechanics where they get their parts.

The slower oil goes thru the filter, the better it filters. If available, a longer filter will keep the oil cleaner and collect more water.
I use Baldwin filters and buy them online here: BF Web Express :: Air Filters, Oil Filters, Fuel Filters, Lube Filters, Coolant Filters
There is an application look up and a look up by OEM number.

Re: Where can I get oil filters for my Yanmar 4JH45?

Have you considered taking it off and bringing it into a Napa or other auto parts place?

Should be easy where you are located.

In addition, Google CAN be your friend. Have you tried searching for "XYZ oil filter equivalents?" Most all of the Catalina one-design websites, for example (and I know you don't have one) have filter equivalents posted because skippers had exactly your problems and were kind enough to share their experiences.

Also, you may try your question on other boating forums, like sailboatowners and sailnet. Your engine is not limited to installation in your particular boat.

Most of these engines started life as tractor engines. Find the tractor engine model and search on that, too.

Good luck.

It is possible that some retail parts store can use the serial number from the engine to pinpoint the filter p/n.
Someone mentioned taking the filter to a parts store. I'd start there.
Good luck.

I would suggest that you only use Yanmar filters. They are only a little more expensive than the brand-x. You can get them at Boatswains Locker in Costa Mesa. They are also available at any Yanmar "authorized" dealer in your area.

124450-35100 is the Yanmar part number for the oil filter.

The basic engine is a Kubota so it is worth tracking down a parts manual for the base engine. It will save you a lot of headache and money.

A Baldwin B179 oil filter should be available at any decent automotive store. Same filter.

I'd tell you that a Baldwin, Fleet Guard, Napa Gold, K&N, Purolator, Mobil 1 are all at least equal to or better than a Yanmar branded filter.
However a Fram and others like STP and other "bargain" filters should be avoided

When did Yanmar start using Kubota engines?

Sorry - I'm wrong on that one. It's Beta that are using Kubota engines.

Been using Napa Gold on our Yanmar for years. Easier to obtain and slightly cheaper.

Re: Where can I get oil filters for my Yanmar 4JH45?

It used to be that Yanmar dealers could only ship parts within their region. If that's still true, Bayshore won't ship to the OP in California.
