Yamaha 9.9 gear shift linkage, can someone please explain the procedure to adjust?

Hi,

I have two high thrust 9.9 Yamaha here. 2014 & 2015 model.
Had both lower units of, cleaned them checked impellers...

I'm having trouble adjusting and reconnecting the gear shift link between the lower and upper left.
Link can be moved up and down in upper and lower leg (not stuck anymore).

Backed off the locking nut and put link nut on upper shift rod.
Can barely grap the link nut when gear shift lever in full reverse. When in forward the nut disappears upward.

Managed to link it, but have a difficulties to adjust it.
I can adjust but do not get the proper adjustment.
Leg fits nicely together apart from that.
At the moment it seams with the lever in forward its geared in, in neutral its geared in and in reverse it spins neutral.

Surely I am not doing it right.

Starter is not turning either, but I think that is due to the bad adjustments (start in gear protection.)

Can someone knowledgeable explain the proper procedure, the service manual does not explain it.

Especially interested in:

1)Should I pull the lower leg shift rod up before connecting or should it be down.

2)Should gear shift lever be in neutral, forward or reverse before connecting?

3)How far should I thread the link nut onto the upper rod before connecting?

4)Is there another shift rod length adjustment on the upper leg upper end? (I doubt it).

Thanks so much for anyone who can shed light on how to proceed!

Franziska

Btw, NO CABLES attached to lever yet. Will do that once adjusted.

You want the gearbox and the throttle lever both in neutral before connecting.

Oops sorry, just spotted the last sentence about no cables being hooked up.

Ok, I think the Yam is similar to the Honda.

Disconnect the shift rod at the gear case. Put the selector lever at the motor into the reverse position. (Whichever way makes the shift rod move up.

Pull up on the shift rod from the gearcase until it fully engages gear. Then screw the connecting nut down over the shift rod. Lock up the lock nut. This should have the shift lever and the gearbox in the same gear.

BTW, you want to have the gearcase fully tightened on to the leg before doing this.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, that was quick, still, if the throttle lever is in neutral the fri! :%!!n link nut disappears upwards into the shaft. Soooo frustrating.

Sounds like the Yam is like the Honda, but backwards!

So undo the nut, push the gearshift rod on the gearcase all the way down. Turn the prop at the same time to let the gear fully engage.

Then select reverse at the shift lever. Then screw the connecting nut down over the shift rod.

What you're after is to have both ends in the same gear before you screw the connecting nut down over the shift rod.

Super instructions! Worked flawlessly. Fwd lever =engaged Fwd, neutral=neutral, Lever aft=Reverse. So happy, thanks so much.

Next thing do the same on engine 2 :-) and find out why starter on engine 1is still not turning...
12v current arrives on engine.

Most repairs can be seen demonstrated on UTUBE.

Yes you can see them on YouTube, but only if you have a fast web connection... So that was not an option.

Yes, embarrassed to say so, but we rewired a lot of stuff while on the hard in April.
The current supply got accidentally inverted (+-) , so the fuse blew. Did think it would try to run backward in this case. But, I was wrong. The fuse blew.

Starter is fine now.

Thanks again. Still learning on a lot on the engines on a day by day base.
