Yamaha 9.9 High Thrust (2015) - Internal gear shift kit?

Hi,

we have two Yamaha 9.9 Four Stroke High Thrust (2015) outboards. They are good engines but have, in my view a disadvantage over the older version of this engine.
Unfortunately Yamaha decided that the gear shift lever is now actuated via a plastic handle outside of the engine housing.
This handle is not very robust and, in a fixed installation like ours at risk of being damaged when the engine is folded up.

Looking at the engine, I noted that beside the location where the throttle cable enters the powerhead, there is still a, currently unused gasket which could lead a control cable inside.
The gear shift plastic handle sits on the outside end of a square axle.
Internally there is a little mugget screw or pin holding this axle in place.

Now I am wondering, does anyone have a, perhaps older model of the 9.9. where the throttle and gear shift cable both end up inside the engine housing? If yes could you be so kind to share some photos how this is connected inside of the housing?

Is there a kit to convert this? Our Yamaha dealer, who stopped selling Yamaha claimed there is no such kit?
Has anyone converted this themselves?

I'd like to get rid of the plastic handle outside.

Maybe make a metal (aluminium?) handle and just replace the plastic one?

This is a 2001 Yamaha 9.9 High Thrust. The shift cable is the cable on the right. The third pic is in neutral, the forth pic is shifted to forward gear. In the third and fourth pictures the cable you see is the throttle cable/end fitting. The shift cable end fitting is behind the throttle fitting.

Did you fabricate a solution to your shift question, or was it curiosity? I am trying to see if there is a solution to convert the system from the tiller handle.

Not yet, we are in Tunisia soon and I'll see if a local has a clever idea on that. They are usually quite clever with stuff like that.
Still, it's a C priority in all honesty.
