Yanmar 1gm Thermostat?

I have been working on my yanmar 1gm and was curious how the engine coolant system works. Removed the hose from the raw water seacock attached a longer hose and placed into a filled bucket,I started the engine and but the engine did not draw any water from the bucket? I ran the motor for about a minute. I shut her down when it did not draw any water from the bucket. Any ideas or suggestions?

First stop would have to be check impeller condition if static lift has not been dramaticly increased by bucket position

Pour water into the intake raw water tube, then place in the bucket when started.
If no action then remove the pump cover and inspect the impeller, lubricate it with liquid soap before restarting.
