Yanmar 2gm runaway

Greetings all new here but have had a runaway diesel event 3 times now and thankfully engine is still alive. All three events required me to change main fuel pump the oil and filters to both oil and fuel. Just completed the 3rd iteration and engine runs kk. However my anxiety level spikes when I start her as I never know when this will occur again. So my question Is the problem theain fuel pump or injector fuel pump. I am at a loss. Tks Mike

That is so rare, what were the causes for a repeat event? (It’s like getting struck twice by lightning.)

Yes, we can see it. I think it would be good to provide additional details about the symptoms, age, your actions, condition of the engine, etc.

The easiest path is to contact a marine engine mechanic for assistance.

Diesel engine have a governor which tries to keep the engine running at the same speed for each throttle setting, sound like yours may have a problem.

Re: Yanmar 2gm runaway

The problem may have been the diaphragm in the fuel lift pump was cracked and was leaking fuel into the crankcase oil. If it gets enough fuel in it, the engine will run on the oil alone. If you changed the fuel lift pump and changed the oil, you may have solved the problem. The sure sign of this problem is that the oil on the dipstick smells like diesel.
