Re: Yanmar 2GM20 v 2GM20 (YEU) engines - Surprise with "E" serial numbers.

Not sure about parts, but a friend has a 2gm20f with the serial number E05076. This engine was new in 2000. Another similar engine installed in 2002, with the serial number E08045. These engines both say "made in Japan", although I suppose they could have been assembled in Europe. But that would be strange, because they were sold new on the west coast of Canada, and it would be far cheaper to send an engine to the west coast of Canada from Japan rather than from Europe.

Yes, I wondered about the Europe assembly thing myself but anything is possible in international trade. They say the shipping miles is the smallest conponent of a freight cost. The majority of the cost is taken up with getting the item to the dock, then loaded and the same at the other end. To say nothing of the paperwork costs.

Other possibility as someone posted, the engine is built in Japan except for one or two minor components (think raw water pump), these are added in the destination country thus allowing it to be claimed as being assembled in Australia, Canada, Europe etc. I wouldn't be surprised if the "additional" components came in the same crate as the motor. Yanmar might use the generitic E serial number prefix to so distinguish these motors.
