yanmar 2QM 15 HP 2 CYLINDER MARINE ENGINE

Appreciate any comments on this engine. Installed in 1981 into yacht.
It is said it has been well serviced and records show 3,800 hours. Salt water cooled. Is running well according to owner. Will inspect boat on Wednesday.

All Yanmars of that era have issues with the exhaust elbow getting blocked. Look for smoke when starting, be sure it revs to its rated max, try to find out if injectors and lift pump have been serviced. By now they should have been. Might want to pay for a compression test.

The problem with the raw water cooled 2Qm15 is that the exhaust manifold is also raw water cooled. If in fresh water, no problem. But if in a salt water environment, the salt water will eventually rust and rot the manifold. That manifold is no longer available, so you are SOL. Very reliable engine other than that.

3800 hours is a lot of time flushing hot salt water thru a cast iron engine block. look for corrosion at the gaskets and manifold. also check the exhaust on cold start .. look for any rust coming out.
