I was shown this trick where you just need a quarter to jump the gap between the top of the starter and the engine. I had to use it once, when something had shorted the fuses there. Mine is a 3GM30F, too.

just need to put the blade of a screwdriver across the terminals of the solenoid on the starter for a few seconds.

I'd use a screwdriver though, it has a handle that you can snatch it off if it spot welds to the contacts, a quarter will work of course but would be real hard to remove if it spot welds.
Plus I don't care who you are, you going to jump when the big sparks fly and the motor turns over.

Make sure its in neutral too, cause it will start if its not

You mean "It's going to start regardless of what gear it's in" I'm sure.
It'd take a braver man than me to hold a quarter there.

You want to connect the big post on the starter with the wire from the battery to the small connection that has the wire from the starter switch.

I know someone that connected the two big posts together. The starter spins but doesn't throw the pinion out into the flywheel.

As cal40john says: the solenoid big post to the little post (usually marked S). It will spark, but not as extreme as between the 2 big posts.
If you're trouble shooting, make sure you have a charged battery. You can hook a test light to the small wire on the S post, and have someone turn the key. Or use a meter. When a solenoid gets old, see cal40john top picture, the posts get pitted on the inside end. Also the contact disk can get pitted. Sometimes the pitting will cause contact failure. It's possible in most solenoids to take out the posts & disk and file/sand them smooth again.

Yes, I know this is not a farm tractor, but people have been killed jumping them, you stand of course in front of the big tire, tractor starts and runs you over.
Just a good habit to ensure anything is not in gear before starting, my wife started her Cadillac CTS-V in gear, clutch in so when she took her foot off the clutch car jumped forward destroying the roll around tool box I've had since high school

Sparks? It certainly made me jump first time I tried it, but not really the second time (when I was singlehanding and it mattered more), but neither time did it spark. Oh, I'm talking about the starter motor. Maybe that's the difference?
