Yanmar 3JH2TE - Water pump reversed?

I have two Yanmar 3JH2TE engines

One has the water pump">raw water pump inlet / outlet reversed to the other

If connected the "right" way around, it sucks in exhaust and blows bubbles out the saildrive.

Looks like one was replaced at some point in the past.

Is there such a thing as different direction yanmar water pumps?

That's virtually gauranteed to be a flexible vane pump, like unto Jabscos. They are symetrical, that is, the round casing has a symetrical insert that squeezes the vanes down at the top of the pump. They work either direction of rotation. The inlet is the side that has the vanes just expanding leaving the top, those vanes carry the water around the bottom, and then the vanes are squeezed, discharging the water out the outlet near the top.

OK. So you can reverse the hoses, such that the inlet and the outlet are reversed. If someone didn't get the rotation right, or was totally blind to the situation, the hoses may be backwards. Check to see what the rotation of each is, and put the right hoses on the right inlets/outlets.

Yeah, I had a hard time getting it straight in my mind.
